Ed Sheeran, one of Britain’s biggest pop stars, has been accused of stealing other artists’ songs as inspiration for his own material.
Documents lodged at the High Court allege that the singer, 28, is “consciously or subconsciously in the habit of appropriating the compositional skill and labour of other songwriters”. Sheeran denies the claims.
The accusation was made by Sam Chokri, 26, a little-known musician who is embroiled in litigation with Sheeran over the origin of Sheeran’s song Shape of You, the biggest-selling UK single of 2017, which reached No 1 in 34 countries.
Chokri alleges that Sheeran copied the chorus from his 2015 song Oh Why. He claims to have sent the song to the star’s “circle” in an attempt to “work together”..
